Dear Parents/Caregivers,
We are now more than half way through a very busy term.
Conference
Last week, I had the privilege of attending a Conference on Wellbeing, where inspiring speakers highlighted the importance of a healthy diet and good sleep. At St Patrick’s School, all classes have a ‘Brain Food’ break around 10am, during which children are encouraged to bring a piece of fresh fruit or vegetables to eat. These short breaks are essential for improving student focus, attention, and overall learning, helping them reset and recharge for better cognitive function, reduced stress, and improved classroom behaviour. To support this, please ensure your child brings their brain food to school each day. Equally important is sleep, which plays a crucial role in children's health and development. Adequate rest strengthens their physical growth, brain function, learning abilities, and emotional well-being. It also enhances their immune system, helping them stay healthy and better equipped for learning.
Classroom Pulse
Each term, students participate in the Classroom Pulse Survey, which consists of eight key questions designed to gauge their school experience. These questions cover important aspects such as feeling cared for by their teacher, enjoying school, having friends, receiving support when facing challenges, learning effectively, having a say in their education, feeling safe, and experiencing a sense of belonging. Once the survey is completed, teachers analyze the results to identify students who may need extra support. If a student rates any of the questions very low, strategies are put in place to address their concerns and improve their experience. Additionally, teachers compare the results with previous terms to assess the success of these strategies and ensure ongoing improvements.
Reading
Reading plays a vital role in developing essential skills and knowledge, benefiting people of all ages and backgrounds. It strengthens cognitive abilities, expands vocabulary, and fosters both empathy and critical thinking. Beyond its educational value, reading provides access to information, broadens cultural understanding, and serves as an enjoyable and relaxing activity. At St Patrick’s School, emerging and developing readers take home decodable readers, which allow them to practice all the sounds in the English language. Once they have mastered these, they can explore other reading schemes, novels, or library books. To support literacy development, we encourage all students to read for at least 15 minutes each night to an adult.
Rock and Water
This term, we introduced the Rock & Water Program to a group of Year 3/4 students. This program is designed to help students develop self-awareness, recognize their personal strengths, and build confidence in navigating the world around them. It encourages them to learn how to play, work, and live harmoniously with others in an ever-changing and multicultural society. Through various exercises and activities, students are supported in discovering their own path, embracing their qualities, and managing the challenges and responsibilities they may face in life. By fostering resilience and self-belief, the program empowers students to approach their future with courage and confidence.
Pupil Free Day
This Friday, 6th June, is our Term 2 Pupil Free Day. While students have the day off, staff will participate in professional learning focused on Explicit Teaching and Positive Behaviour Intervention Support. For working parents, Camp Australia is offering care, but it’s essential to book your child in as soon as possible to secure a place. Please remember that Monday 9th June is a Public Holiday.
In all things love
